Fueling Collaboration: Social Acceptance and Communication Strategies for Wildland Fire Management

PANEL DISCUSSION: Thursday, February 20, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM ET
 FREE

VIRTUAL - Register at link below to receive email with link to webinar

Prescribed fire is one of the most effective tools for fuels reduction, habitat improvement, and ecological restoration. Yet, there are challenges surrounding social acceptance in implementing prescribed fire programs across the region. This Fueling Collaboration panel discussion will explore the factors that influence public perception and acceptance of prescribed fire in land management. Experts from diverse fields will share insights into effective and culturally appropriate communication strategies that engage communities, address concerns, overcome resistance, and build robust support for ecological restoration practices that include the use of fire. By highlighting successful examples from across the region, this panel aims to equip both fire researchers and fire managers with the tools needed to foster community trust and collaboration in fire-adapted landscapes.

Wildland fire managers require an expanded toolbox for decision support in the context of an increasingly novel fuel and fire environment complicated by a changing climate, invasive species encroachment, and rapid increase in wildland-urban interface in many areas within the U.S.  Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) offers an efficient, cost-effective, and powerful tool for characterizing high resolution, sub-canopy forest and fuel structural conditions with the simple press of a button.  In this panel discussion, TLS subject matter experts from both research and operations will share their efforts and practical applications of TLS and other 3D wildland fuels characterization tools for improved wildland fire planning, fire effects monitoring, and decision support.

Fueling Collaboration: Prescribed Fire and Wetlands - An Important but Rarely Told Story

PANEL DISCUSSION: Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM ET

VIRTUAL - Register at link below to receive email with link to meeting

Wetlands are the forgotten sibling of the prescribed fire world. While upland ecosystems across the Eastern U.S. have received significant attention for their fire-dependency, wetlands—characterized by their more episodic encounters with fire—rarely receive equitable fire management investments. Fire managers face unique challenges in these environments, where hydric soils, muck, and dense vegetation can prolong smoke production, encourage smoldering, and hinder vehicle access. As a result, fire-dependent wetlands nationwide have suffered, leading to declines in numerous plant and animal species.  In this Fueling Collaboration panel discussion, we will explore the role of fire in various wetland ecosystems and examine the challenges and opportunities associated with its use. Join us as we hear from scientists, land managers, and biologists working in pocosins, marshes, swamps, bogs, and isolated wetlands.

What is a TREX?

Have you heard about prescribed fire training exchanges (aka TREX) and wondered what they are all about? Do you have fire staff who seek additional experience or opportunities to get task books signed? These TREX fire training experiences are common in other parts of the country but are brand new here in Michigan. The Michigan Prescribed Fire Council recently held the first ever TREX in Michigan and are now starting to plan the next event tentatively scheduled for 10 days in September of 2025.

Huron Pines, Michigan Prescribed Fire Council, MI Dept. of Military and Veteran's affairs and our partners at The Ember Alliance, will be hosting a free informational webinar on August 8 at 3pm (EST) to share information about TREX and answer any questions you may have. You can register for the Webinar here.

Additional information, webinar link and agenda will be shared with all who register.

Successfully Bridging the Gap: Eastern US Models of Fire Science and Management Collaboration

Photo Credit: Helen Mohr, USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station

PANEL DISCUSSION: Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM ET

Land management programs are frequently confronted with the imperative of incorporating the most advanced scientific knowledge into their decision-making processes along with filling voids in research needed to move along effective management. Nevertheless, the persistent disparities between the realms of science and management often impede effective collaboration. In this panel, we will draw inspiration from successful case studies in the eastern United States, where land managers and scientists have forged pioneering partnerships, yielding tangible advancements in the field.

This panel discussion is pending approval for 1.5 Category 1 CFE's by the Society of American Foresters.

Phenology of Fire: Listening to the Plants and Animals

PANEL DISCUSSION: Thursday, January 18, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM ET

Season of fire. Opening the burn window. Both of these focus on one of the elements that make up a fire regime – frequency, intensity/severity, extent/scale, and seasonality. Decades of spring-and/or autumn-centric fire can cause a site or landscape to respond very differently than when burned repeatedly across all flammable seasons. Summer burns can produce differing fire effects including increased species richness averages, biomass, and stem counts (especially forbs), and breaking up the plant species dominance resulting from dormant season burn windows. Our panelists will bring fresh voices to how we can learn from listening to our fire-dependent plants and animals and let the fire effects lead us toward desired outcomes.

Fueling Collaboration Panel: The Future is Smoky

PANEL DISCUSSION: Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM ET

With increasing wildfire activity due to changes in climate, smoke will likely become more prevalent and continue to have an effect on society. Earlier this year, smoke from Canada wildfires lowered air quality in the eastern U.S. to its worst levels in recorded history. As the climate heats up and creates drier conditions, smoky skies will grow increasingly common. Health concerns and prescribed burning actions needed to restore functioning ecosystems will be impacted by already smoky conditions across the country. Panelists include research meteorologists, air quality experts, and fire practitioners. Together, they will explore how we can address and adapt to a smoky future.

This panel discussion has been approved for 1.5 Category 1 CFE's by the Society of American Foresters.

Foresters and land managers have many forest management tools at their disposal. One tool that's often overlooked is prescribed fire. Though underutilized, prescribed fire for forest management is important for ecosystem health, forest regeneration, wildlife habitat, forest health, and disease control.Join us for insightful discussions with national experts as we discuss forest management using prescribed fire. Learn some of the practical knowledge of where, when, why, and how to apply fire in forest ecosystems.

This webinar series will explore several facets of prescribed fire related to forests and forest management. We have invited speakers to provide their perspectives and offer advice on how we can advance prescribed fire as a forest management tool in the future.

Webinar abstract: Over the past century, fire suppression has facilitated broad ecological changes in the composition, structure, and function of fire-dependent landscapes throughout the eastern US, which are in decline. These changes have likely contributed mechanistically to the enhancement of habitat conditions that favor pathogen-carrying tick species, key wildlife hosts of ticks, and interactions that have fostered pathogen transmission among them and to humans. While the long-running paradigm for limiting human exposure to tick-borne diseases focuses responsibility on individual prevention, the continued expansion of medically important tick populations, increased incidence of tick-borne disease in humans, and emergence of novel tick-borne diseases highlights the need for additional approaches to stem this public health challenge. Another approach that has the potential to be a cost-effective and widely applied but that remains largely overlooked is the use of prescribed fire to ecologically restore degraded landscapes that favor ticks and pathogen transmission. We examine the ecological role of fire and its effects on ticks within the eastern United States, especially examining the life cycles of forest-dwelling ticks, shifts in regional-scale fire use over the past century, and the concept that frequent fire may have helped moderate tick populations and pathogen transmission prior to the so-called fire-suppression era that has characterized the past century. We explore mechanisms of how fire and ecological restoration can reduce ticks, the potential for incorporating the mechanisms into the broader strategy for managing ticks, and the challenges, limitations, and research needs of prescribed burning for tick reduction.
