Senior Meteorologist
Nathan is a Senior Meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids.
Nathan grew up in Northern Lower Michigan along beautiful Lake Michigan in Manistee. He attended West Shore Community College, before transferring to Central Michigan University to complete his B.S. in Earth Science/Meteorology.
Nathan has been a Meteorologist in the NWS for almost 27 years. He spent his first 3+ years at the NWS Anchorage, Alaska Office before transferring to NWS Grand Rapids in August 2002 to be closer to family.
Nathan found his way into Fire Weather when he was still at NWS Anchorage. He accompanied an Incident Meteorologist (IMET) to a Wildfire near Anchorage, and actually was in training to become an IMET himself before moving to NWS Grand Rapids. After moving to NWS Grand Rapids, he started the Fire Weather program at the office from scratch, and has continued as the Fire Weather Program Leader, to build it and work with Fire partners ever since.
Nathan is married to his wife Lesley, and they have three sons. Two attend Grand Valley State University, and the third one is a Freshman in high school. They like to go to the beaches of Lake Michigan in the summer, and travel when they can.
Nathan’s hobbies and interests include hanging out with his family, golfing, gardening, walking, watching various sports events, and volunteering with many groups in the community and his church.
